Benjamin and Leon Mare' Sensei ~(Identical Twins), started their karate careers in 1973 in Durban, South Africa.The South African Goju-Kai at the time was headed up by the founder Leo Lipinski Sensei . The Durban "Radio House" Dojo located in Gardiner Street was where the twins developed their karate foundation. The training in those days was very physical and very focused towards kumite, resulting in the development of a number of fighting legends. Some of these included the likes of Ian Mactavish, Tony Abrahams, Vassie Naidoo and of course the "Terrible Twins". During the 70's Goju Karateka were feared opponents in the local tournaments. The "motto" in those days was "Win or be disqualified, but never lose." The total dedication towards Goju Karate by Benjamin & Leon Mare' is unquestionable and while many of the Goju legends remained in the past, the Mare' twins are still around and just as deadly as they were. Benjamin Mare' Sensei (5th Dan) lives in Johannesburg, South Africa and heads up the South African Goju Ryu Karate-do Goshu-Kan, while Leon Mare' Sensei (recently graded to 5th Dan by Fugiwara and Lipinski Sensei) lives in London where he traines directly under Leo Lipinski Shihan (7th Dan) Update 2002: Since this was written, Benjamin Mare' Sensei has been graded to 6th Dan. Leon Mare Sensei now lives in the U.S.A and is the president of New Mexico Goju Ryu Karate-do Seiwa-Kai. Updated 2005: Sensei Benjamin Mare' is the president of Gojuryu in South Africa. Sensei Leon Mare' has opened a dojo in Las Vegas NV, USA. He is still acting as President of the NM JKF.
